Goulart & Rupkus Fish Company was in operation from 1937 to 1964.
Owned by Manuel “Mike” Goulart and Adam Rupkus, the fish company was located in Barnstable Harbor.
Weir fishing was the primary fishing method and the fish weirs were located approximately 3 miles off Sandy Neck.
Weir fishermen rely on nets and nature to make their catch. The weir’s maze has two chambers. Once the fish enter the trap, their instinct is to head towards deeper water which takes them into the heart of the trap.
Captain Steve Karras would like to thank his father, John Karras, and Mickey Goulart for sharing with him these historic photos and stories of their days on the water.
